Welcome to 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten! This free program encourages you to read 1,000 books with your kid before he or she enters school. This goal, experts say, helps children learn to read for themselves.

One of the best ways to encourage learning is to spend time sharing books everyday. Reading together helps develop important pre-reading skills that provide a solid reading foundation--a key to school and learning success. Plus. sharing stories together is fun!

Steps to getting started:

  1. Sign up at the Reference Desk, where you will receive a folder with the first Reading Log Sheet.
  2. Read and record your first 100 books.
  3. Bring the Reading Log Sheet back to the Reference Desk and receive a sticker and the next Reading Log Sheet.
  4. At 1,000 books, your child graduates from the program and receives a certification of achievement and a book to keep.

Here are the easy steps for participating:

  1. Read together.
  2. Write the titles down on your Reading Log Sheet.
  3. When you finish 100 books, Bring your Reading Log Sheet to the library and
    • Receive a sticker for your completed Reading Log Sheet.
    • Place a sticker on the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Bulletin Board.
    • Receive your next Reading Log Sheet.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 and receive a different sticker and Reading Log Sheet for each level
  5. We have special awards along the way for both you and your child. Awards are given at the 300, 600, and 1,000 levels.
  6. After finishing 1,000 books, your child
    • Receives a book and a certificate of completion.
    • Gets an awesome jump-start on success in school.

This program has no end date except your child's going to school, so do not feel rushed--just enjoy the experience! Take every chance you have to read with your children, tell stories, say nursery rhymes, sing songs, and attend library programs. By reading just three stories a day you and your child will have read over 1,000 books in one year. You will also have shared many special moments along the way.
